Shalom!!
In the name of the Lord, I send my regards to you.
How have you been in this hot weather?
Each household has one or two prayer requests, and today I would like to share a prayer request for my daughter, Hyerin.
We started our ministry in 1992 with the Gwangju branch of the missionary organization Jesus Missionary Group, and in September 1999, God gave us a daughter, Hyerin.
Everyone was excited with anticipation for the birth of a millennium baby, just before the year 2000, and it was a time when the church was also rejoicing that the next generation of leaders would be born.
However, from July 1999 to May 2000, five children were born among the full-time ministers of the Jesus Evangelism Gwangju branch, all of whom were born with physical illnesses.
The first child went blind in one eye within less than a year, and...
The second child is a dwarf.
The third child was born after only seven months and had to spend several months in an incubator as a premature infant, while the fourth child was diagnosed with childhood cancer and went to heaven at the age of two.
And our daughter, Hyerin, was born with facial deformities and the most severe case of cleft lip and palate. Because Hyerin had no palate and was split even in her throat, it was dangerous to swallow the bottle without being able to suck it up. Therefore, we were fed her with a hose in the premature infant care unit at Chonnam National University Hospital after birth. Starting with her first surgery at 7 months old, over the course of about 20 years, she underwent 13 general anesthesia surgeries (tear separation, lip suture, palate surgery - including tongue grafts, uvula sutures, gum surgery (bone grafts), rhinoplasty, otitis media, long-term corrective treatment, etc.... I have been handling long special orthodontic treatments.
Nevertheless, I was just grateful and proud of my daughter for fighting well and growing up bright...
Hyerin, in her early twenties, experienced burnout during COVID-19 and was diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder while receiving counseling. After recovering her strength through regular counseling and medication at a psychiatric clinic for about five years, she applied to numerous jobs to help her adapt to society, but was repeatedly fired.
I learned last year that Hyerin has a mild intellectual disability, and I learned too late why she had difficulty adjusting to school and work life, leaving me feeling lost and at a loss.
And Hyerin, who had been trying hard to survive without even realizing there was a disability, felt so sorry for her that her heart crumbled.
My spouse and I quietly spent the first half of this year spending time caring for Hyerin while living our daily lives together.
Hyerin will face a challenging life in the future, but she is gradually trying to regain her strength by holding onto her faith and confronting it.
The surgery that we had indefinitely postponed due to difficulties will be performed next week, September 18th, at the Department of Oral and Facial Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital.
Since we do not have a church in the country and are carrying out missionary work in the Philippines with the small support of our friends of faith, the surgery cost of 20 million won ( around $15,000) is like a huge mountain, which is too much for our financial situation. While praying, we started a small fundraising campaign through our friends of faith, and we are praying that God of Jehovah Ireh will provide the surgery costs.
As Hyerin grew up, she was bullied by her friends due to surgical scars on her face and cracked lips under her nose, and she started playing the piano in the first year of middle school. Since she majored in practical music at a vocational college, my wife and I are praying that if Hyerin's inner self becomes healthy, she can serve the Kingdom of God and the Church as a praise minister or worship minister.
Please pray during prayer that our sick and fragile Hyerin will receive her double jaw surgery on September 18th without any aftereffects, thanks to God's grace.
Expressing gratitude and love,
From the Philippines, from Cheon Hong-baek & Jung Mi-ran.
